LETTER FROM VALERIE

Valerie Frederickson
Founder & CEO

  The Land Grab of 2020
I hope you all are having a great fall and enjoying some nice weather. The smoke from the fires here on the West Coast has finally dissipated, and we have blue skies again in Northern California and once again can go outside for walks (or just to breathe).
This will be a short letter, because we are so busy with a plethora of HR searches and a bevy of HR advisory work. We have around 25 People/HR searches listed in the newsletter this month. Please check out our searches and think about whom you know who might be good.
We’re also hiring more experienced high-level and mid-level HR executives for our Advisory Practice, and internally hiring experienced HR executive search people who are partner-level, mid-level and entry-level. All our clients are hiring, ranging from moderate (25-50 job openings monthly) to high (thousands monthly). They need either a first or upgraded Head of People/HR, or a Head of Total Rewards, Talent, D&I or HRBP. We’ve got numerous huge IPOs lined up, companies of all sizes are doing strategic acquisitions, and everyone wants help revisiting their Employer-Employee experience and evaluating what this will all mean post-Covid. My particular passion right now is coaching CEOs and board members on candidate selection, and on how to look at themselves more introspectively and tie their findings in with whom they hire. Come join the fun: interview for a new job, look at how to upgrade your team and think about how to improve your programs. Welcome to Autumn 2020!
  Best,

  THE COVID CORNER
A Note About the West Coast Fires
With all the U.S. West Coast fires, orange skies and smoky air, on top of the ongoing pandemic, we on the West Coast are focused on hanging in there and hoping the fires can subside soon. Our hearts go out to those who have suffered unimaginable losses, and we’re grateful to the firefighters on the front lines. It has really been difficult between the smoke, high heat, lack of AC and lack of anywhere to go to escape. Luckily this week we have blue skies and can breathe again without coughing.
  An Update: Home Schooling Advice
Many families are finding that distance learning is difficult because their kids miss in-person class interactions. My kids are cool because we’re doing our Little School with five fifth graders and an eighth grader and a full-time private teacher supporting the local school’s curriculum. Not everyone can do exactly this, but my advice based on what’s been working well with this situation is as follows:

  • Find a family you can “bubble” with who is as Covid-safe as you are. I did a search to find the right three families to join our Little School bubble, and it has paid off now as the kids can get together in person without masks.

  • There will never be a better year to hire recent college grads or current students to tutor your kids, so take advantage of cheap or even free tutoring (see Nextdoor postings). This can be done outside if necessary for Covid safety.

  • Consistently provide your kids’ teachers with feedback on what’s working and modify the school program to meet your kids’ needs--whether they need much less Zoom time or more, quiet time to get work done or frequent check-ins. Your teacher won’t know if you don’t tell them.

  • Let your teacher, principal and superintendent know how much you appreciate and support them.

  • Take your kids out of the house as much as possible, for drives, safe errands or walks for a break.

  • Have a video game time strategy personalized for each kid. I want my daughter to play Roblox so she can “be” with her friends and want my son off of Fortnight because it’s addictive. Though this isn’t exactly equal, it’s true to what each child needs (and Mommy Knows Best).
