LETTER FROM VALERIE

Valerie Frederickson
Founder & CEO

We all have reasons why we work, rather than golfing or growing runner beans or perfecting our windsurfing foil. For me, the reasons include that I get to be generous and share my wisdom, help my clients grow, and make a difference in people’s lives. My job combines excitement, teamwork, hard work and gratification all wrapped up into one. It’s satisfying as my twins would say.
This last month it was especially so, because my Search team placed a truly one in a million HR executive, Leander LeSure, in the top People role at Stockx, a hot company with one of the best CEOs I’ve ever worked with, Scott Cutler. In the area of non-profits, it’s been very satisfying helping one of the nation's largest food banks build out their HR team to help deal with hunger for hard working families. Among other searches, we've also been finding the first Head of People for a new startup co-founded by two of the most successful tech executives in the world. We're helping my long-term friend Kat Weslock build out the HR team at Avalara, and helping Jenny Dearborn, a rockstar HR executive and board member, build the HR team at Klaviyo. Additional, very exciting news is that we’re conducting the chief experience officer search for what will be one of the most anticipated IPOs of the year. And we're partnering with Tipalti, who just raised $150M in new funding, now at a valuation of over $2B, and doing a search for a super-smart engineering executive now running a major cyber security company in Oregon.
So in summary, a big thank you to all the clients, candidates, friends and acquaintances of me and my firm. Next month I'll share news of our HR Advisory practice, and what's going on in that world.
  Best,

  THE COVID CORNER
  Covid-19 and Halloween
What are you doing for Halloween? As it falls for the first time in years on a Saturday, parents don’t have to worry about it being a school/work night. (Can we have a campaign promise about making it always the last Saturday in October?) Yet due to Covid-19, here in California health officials have told us all not to go trick-or-treating.
Whether you have sad reactions to this—and stages of denial, bargaining and acceptance—seems to depend primarily on whether you have school-aged kids. Parents of the afore-mentioned almost 100% plan on decorating, having a small outdoor party and perhaps doing just a little trick-or-treating. Those whose kids are grown say that it’s no big deal to skip one year. I haven’t figured out exactly what I’ll do. We normally get many trick-or-treaters at our house and though I’m not worried about people touching candy, the prospect of a thousand little mouths breathing in close quarters does give me goosebumps.
So we’ll decorate our front yard with a non-scary Candyland theme (since this year’s scary enough); boo some neighborhood kids and classmates; and have a small daytime party with our little school pod. I’ve asked everyone I know to decorate because I love driving around to see Halloween decorations. We have a few toddlers and preschoolers who like to come to our house every day, swing, and move around the Easter rabbit decorations I now permanently keep out for them. I’m tempted to ask their parents if perhaps just a few could come over in costumes, for candy hidden in the front yard. It’s a nice thing to think about.
