LETTER FROM VALERIE

Valerie Frederickson
Founder & CEO

Where Will the New HR Leaders Come From? Where Have the Good Ones Gone?
Last week’s Coinbase IPO, as with other 2021 newly public companies Bumble, Coursera and Roblox, minted and popped out shiny new billionaires and millionaires, and put many employees, including human resources (HR) and people leaders, in the enviable place of never having to work again, As ultra-nouveau-riche executives might say, “My children’s children will never have to work.” Upcoming IPOs such as Nextdoor, The Honest Company, Couchbase and Instacart will likely create more people whose new priorities will include generation-skipping estate planning, island buying and hopefully, solving global warming. These IPOs, along with stock market gains, mean many experienced HR leaders will soon exit the traditional job market for something more fun and flexible.
From an HR search perspective, this means that clients will show us a list of 10 highly recommended HR leaders to recruit, and I’ll have the sad job of telling them that all are now doing executive coaching, board work or consulting (nothing too heavy that interferes with travel). Adult development studies show that after 40, individuals want to give up the daily wheat grind for more flexibility. And with the success of these IPOs, for many their time has come.

What are we doing about this, besides seeking HR executives who haven’t yet had a big IPO hit? For one, we have successfully recruited up-and-coming HR leaders from larger companies to fill top roles at smaller firms. We’ve recently seen CPOs and CHROs at pre-IPO companies, at which they've been for the long haul, be ready to make a move. And we target up-and-comers such as HRBPs or Heads of Talent Acquisition who are ready for top roles. Finally, we’re finding great businesspeople outside of HR and pulling them in.

With tremendous demand for HR leadership, it’s no surprise to find new HR Boot Camps for those with no HR background teaching the basics in six weeks. With so many new people in HR roles at early-stage startups, CFOs, GCs, COOs and even CEOs will need to manage the function more closely. The need for experienced HR leadership is also placing high demand on our HR advisory practice. So the circle continues.

  THE COVID CORNER
  Happy Spring!
Seeing the trees turn green and the bulbs rise up signals my favorite time of year, which I associate with filling my minivan with plants from the local nurseries, even if I’ve run out of room to put them. Gardening and plants are my true joy, and at times my obsession.
Another great joy is having been 100% vaccinated. About the only other thing that feels better than having had my second vaccine shot is knowing that 100% of our team cares as much as I do, and that even young employees have now received their first dose. I am so happy and proud of our team and relieved that I don’t know any “anti-vaxxers.” I am now able to be in a room with an executive from our team and not be as obsessed about open windows, air flow and masks. I am able to hug our Business Operations Manager for the first time in over a year and snuggle her toddler on my lap. I now count the days until my twins turn 12 in September, so that they can be vaccinated, too. At the same time, I feel terrible for people in parts of the world that have run out of breathing machines and have ambulance traffic jams outside their hospitals.

I hope that everyone who wants a vaccine receives it this year, and that everyone is motivated to get one.
